What is the conference?
The Junior Leader Training Conference is a seven-day outdoor experience for boy leaders in support of the Scoutmasters responsibility for the training of troop junior leaders. It is an official course of the B.S.A. and is conducted by the Viking Council Training Committee.
What is its purpose?
Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters have the responsibility of training their own junior leaders. The purpose of this conference is not to assume that role, but to support it! The objectives of the conference are
To give participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop program.
To give participants a basic knowledge of the eleven skills of leadership and help them relate these skills to their troop responsibilities.
To give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops.
To create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience "Scouting at its best."
To enhance the relationship between the participant and his Scoutmaster.
To have fun!
Who may attend?
Each participant must be a First Class Scout, 13 years old, and currently filling a leadership position in the troop as Senior Patrol Leader or Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, or likely to assume one of these positions soon. This course fills on a first-come, first-served basis due to the high demand. Because of this, Troops are limited to only one Scout per Troop. It is important that you submit your registrations ASAP after receiving them.
Is the Scoutmaster involved?
The conference is intended to strengthen the relationship between the junior leader and his Scoutmaster. Scoutmasters can get additional information regarding the training involved and how they can become more involved in the development of their participants by contacting the Council Service Center. Ask for Steve Stobbs (763-545-4550). Special information sessions can be arranged at Roundtables, as well, with both adult and Scout staff explaining the programís purposes and expectations.
